Information: In India, they use some rail transport. They use a lot of buses. Around 90% of the public transport is used by buses. The safety is in the bigger city's better than in the smaller outer neighbourhoods. If people are going to work or school, they mostly travel by bus. If they need to travel further, they travel with the train. The railway is the safest and also the cheapest way of traveling in India. Buses are more expensive than the trains but people use them a lot more so they can get closer to their destination. The people are quite satisfied with the transport, well the richer people, because for the poorer people, the public transport is way too expensive.
Research: Research question; Are transport facilities sufficient for all groups in society in your region and what are the traffic safety issues for groups in your region?
Interview with Rijkswaterstaat
We asked what the costs are from roads: One road doesn't have the same costs as the other road. This is because there are different types of roads that are being laid. The prices are also different proceedings of roads and what they have to do to keep the road safe. The lenght of the road also matter to have the price of the road. The costs can go very fast to millions of euros per road.
We also asked if public transport is equal for everyone:
(Public) transport is for everybody equal in the Netherlands. You can travel with public transports no matter what your origin, job, money you get or religion. The only thing is that you have to pay if you make use of public transport. For normal transport is also everything equal. You do need a drivers licsence if you want to drive in certain vehicles for example; cars, trucks or motorcycles. This also counts when you work behind the scenen of a company.
Interview with Anwb
We had the question; How many accidents are there in a year?;
In 2020 there were around 661 traffic deaths. Most of those people were between the age of 65 and the age of 79. And there were also a lot of death from older people such as 80+. The most accidents happened with a car and the second most accidents were with bicycle. The most car accidents happened with a speed of 80km/h. The most common accidents were not the deadly ones but just the ones with small dents from parking.
Our second question was: What can you do to prevent accidents?
You can reduce accidents by making cars safer (also for other road users), make roads safer, for example a guardrail. You can also reduce accidents by less speed differences and lower the speed ( for example a seperate bicycle path ).
Interview with Cora van Nieuwenhuizen (minister of infrastructure)
The first question was: Are you making plans to improve the roads?
Yes, there are new plans for making better roads which are safer. Also for in the winter when it's slippery, they are making plans for that too. There are also plans for the speed limits. All the highways will go to the speed of 100km/h and the roads are already quite safe but also more guardrails along the roads where there are none.
The second question was: What are things that can be improved?
The things that can be improved is definitly the safety of cars. Especially people who drive in old cars are the cars that are not that safe. Also the use of alchohol and a phone when you are driving has to be less so there must be more check for that and new inventions so that that can be tested.
Communication We had a lot of conversations with the Indian people, they were really kind and had a motivated attitude. We asked them 2 serious questions about the roads in their country and what their opinion was about them. We also had some funny conversations about each other and what we are all doing in our free-time. We really liked those Indian people to work with and talk too!
Reflection Answer main question: The answer is yes all transport facilities are sufficient for all groups of society. You have to have the money to pay for public transport or to buy a car but overall it's all sufficient. The safety issues are mostly that people don't look far enough and they just hit a pole are something. Also a big issue is people who are looking on their phone or people who had drank before driving. Also people who are driving too fast and hit other people or things. It was a very educational exercise. We learned a lot about the traffic in the Netherlands and we hope that the Indians will think it’s interesting too. This exercise really improved our cooperation. We had a lot of work on this project because we had to interview a lot of people. We also had to search on Google a lot, because not everyone responded immediately. We were very excited to do this exercise, because it’s with real people in another country. The Indian children are very nice, we chatted with them and they told us something about India. We are happy with the result and we hope the Indian children will like it too. We are very curious what the Indian children made. Who did what?
